Use list formatting samples to enhance your SharePoint Lists & Libraries
SharePoint Online has come a long way visually from the old days, and also from an “out-of-the-box” functionality point of view. A lot of things don’t require organisations to code or script to get something decent. BUT, we also have fantastic contributions from the Community with List Formatting samples! And that’s what we’re going to look at today!
So… Do you want your SharePoint lists and libraries to look better? Yes? Then read on! 😉
Where are those samples?
I’m glad you ask. Tons of list formatting samples are hosted on Github, but there’s some nice documentation for you to get started: List Formatting Samples. If you go into the ‘Grouping’ section on the left, you’ll see different categories like By Column Type, By Operator, etc.. It’s well organised. When you click on a sample, you’ll be redirected to the Github location where that sample is, and most of them have screenshots so you can see straight away if they’d fit your needs.
How does it work?
Once you’ve found a sample that you like, look at the file with a .json
extension. You also need to pay attention if specific columns are required for that particular sample, but all should be explained in the README.md
file of the sample under View Requirements. Then it’s only a matter of copy/paste with a bit of configuration to suit your scenario. Yes, really!
Below are a few examples of list formatting sample screenshots taken from the Github repo.

Can I modify them?
Of course you can. Use those samples created by the Community and amend then to suit your needs. If you’d like to contribute, you’re more than welcome to do so! Every contribution is very much appreciated 🤗
